Armor for an NPC

July 25, 2016

Armor of the Depths (Black Jade Breastplate – Artifact ***)

Forged by the Outcaste Melchior Stag, King of the Black Sea, in RY 654, the Armor of the Depths served him well in his time as a pirate captain. However, in RY 762, he encountered a Peleps military vessel he could neither outfight nor outrun, and he was taken captive. His armor was stripped from him and given to the commander of the vessel, “Peleps” Kyshatrya, who still uses it to this day. The Armor of the Depths is a black jade breastplate, engraved with swirling nautilus patterns, with a high gorget that rises to conceal the lower half of the wearer’s face like a mask.

Evocations of the Armor of the Depths

A Solar or Dragon-Blood who attunes to the Armor of the Depths for two additional motes finds herself able to breathe freely underwater.

Tidal Pull
Cost: 3m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: None

The pull of the tide is inexorable, and so, too, is the pull from this armor. When this Evocation is activated, it creates a momentary pulse of tidal gravity, enough to pull an attacker off-balance. It reverts (wearer’s Essence) 10s on the attack roll back to single successes.

Tidal Crash
Cost: 4m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Tidal Pull

The armor’s tidal gravity grows, able to haul an opponent off-balance even when they are not attacking. This Evocation reduces an opponent’s Initiative by (wearer’s Essence), but only if that would Crash them. The initiative so stolen is not gained by the Armor’s wearer, but is lost.

Tidal Force
Cost: 5m; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Tidal Crash

The pull of the armor becomes too great to be borne, separating even the mightiest warriors from their weapons. This Evocation is a Reflexive Disarm gambit.

The Stormblade

July 22, 2016

The Stormblade (Blue Jade Daiklave – Artifact ***)

Forged in RY 223 by master bladesmith Manosque Zhennan for his cousin Sharmija, the Stormblade was confiscated during the purge of House Manosque and somehow ended up in the coffers of House Peleps, where it has remained until now. Given as a graduation present to the Lost Egg “Peleps” Kyshatrya, it now serves her will aboard the pirate-hunting vessel Lost Dragon’s Justice. The Stormblade itself is a long, curved blade with a basket-hilt crafted to look like a web of lightning around the wielder’s hand. The wide blade is graven with runes in Old Realm, exhorting the glory of the storm.

Evocations of the Stormblade

A Solar or Dragon-Blood who attunes to the Stormblade learns Lightning Strike at no cost.

Lightning Strike
Cost: 5m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: None

Essence lightning arcs along the Stormblade, empowering its strike with the speed and ferocity of striking lightning. The wielder may use this Evocation to take her action (Essence or 3, whichever is greater) ticks higher in the initiative order than her actual initiative would allow. If she uses her turn to make a decisive attack against an enemy who has not yet acted, the damage roll counts the bonus from this Evocation as actual Initiative and receives doubled 10s on its damage roll.

Thunderbolt
Cost: 6m, 3i; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Dual
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Lightning Strike

Hurling a bolt of Essence lightning from the tip of the sword, the wielder can use this Evocation to make an attack at a target at up to Short range. If the target of adecisive attack enhanced by this Evocation is standing in at least ankle-high water, the wielder may pay an additional Willpower to subject everyone else connected to that body of water to a one-time, lightning-based environmental hazard with the traits of a bonfire.

Eye of the Storm
Cost: 6m; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Simple
Keywords: None
Duration: One scene
Prerequisites: Thunderbolt

With the Stormblade held high, the wielder calls the fury of the storm down into it like a lightning rod, protecting herself from the deleterious effects of the tempest. While this Evocation is in effect, the wielder suffers no environmental penalties from storm-based effects and takes no damage from storm-based environmental hazards. She also enjoys (Essence) automatic successes to resist the effects of Charms, Evocations and spells that invoke themes of thunder, wind and lightning.

Command the Storm
Cost: 10m, 1W; Mins: Essence 3
Type: Simple
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Eye of the Storm

The truest power of the Stormblade is to command storms themselves. By using this Evocation, the wielder can mute or intensify the environmental penalties caused by a storm by one, to a minimum of 0 or a maximum of -3. This can create a storm from nothing or reduce an existing storm to non-existence, dissipating it unnaturally. If activated again in immediate subsequent actions, reduce the cost of the Evocation to 5m, 0W. Storms created by this Evocation tend to last until the end of the scene, though if conditions are right, they may grow and take on a life of their own at the Storyteller’s discretion. Finally, while a storm created or enhanced by this Evocation is present in a scene, the wielder may reduce the cost of Thunderbolt to 3m,1i.

Demonic Tattoos of Cecaelia

July 21, 2016

At the risk of being too prolific, I’ve also made Evocations for some demonic tattoos, like Mara’s but for Cecaelia, the Heartless Sentinel, a custom 2CD I made back in 2nd Ed.

Evocations of the Demonic Tattoos of Cecaelia

Turn the Tides
Cost: None; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: Mute
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: None

Cecaelia, the Heartless Sentinel, draws her power from Kimbery, the Sea that Marched Against the Flame, and her sorcerers draw similar power from the ocean. Once per story, when fully submerged in a body of water at least four range bands across, the sorcerer may benefit from a free full Occult Excellency. Note that this Charm has the Mute Keyword; the sorcerer’s power is never obvious.

Power from the Sea
Cost: None; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Turn the Tides

Sorcery is draining on the reserves of a sorcerer; Cecaelia understands this, and reinvigorates her chosen. Once per story, when submerged in a body of water at least four range bands across, the sorcerer may regain one point of temporary Willpower. This cannot take the sorcerer above his normal maximum.

Cecaelian Manipulation
Cost: None (+1WP); Mins: Essence 3
Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisites: None

The demons summoned by a sorcerer of Cecaelia are often touched by her power and her form. The sorcerer may spend one extra point of Willpower when casting Demon of the First Circle to grant the summoned demon Gills (as per the three-dot Merit) and allow it to swim at its normal movement speed (generally one range band per turn). These benefits last until the demon is killed or its service ends, and always come with some visible alteration to the beast’s anatomy. Blood Apes altered by this Evocation might have a strong tail instead of legs, while a Beauteous Wasp might have fins instead of wings.

Cecaelian Mastery
Cost: None; Mins: Essence 4
Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisites: Cecaelian Manipulation

This Evocation permanently enhances its prerequisite, further mutating the demons so summoned and altered. In addition to the normal effects of Cecaelian Manipulation, Cecaelian Mastery grants the demon a non-Charm bonus die to all rolls made while submerged. This Evocation yet further alters the demon’s appearance, making it unquestionably aquatic in nature. Blood Apes may retain only the barest vestige of fur, replaced by glistening scales and a series of thick, writhing tentacles in place of legs, while a Beauteous Wasp may have traded in its legs for ephemeral yet beautiful undulating fins.

Pull of the Tides
Cost: None; Mins: Essence 4
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Cecaelian Mastery, Power from the Sea

Even the immutable nature of sorcery can be mutable when exposed to the ever-changing waters of the sea. When the sorcerer is fully submerged in any body of water at least four range bands across, his control spell automatically alters to contain aspects of the ocean or ocean life (he may cast Invulnerable Skin of Bronze only to find himself covered in protective barnacles, for example, while Death of Obsidian Butterflies might produce razor-sharp coral anemones instead). Further, once per story, he may invoke this Evocation at no cost to empower his control spell while so submerged. If he does so, the sorcerer finds the spell’s cost reduced by either 5 sorcerous motes (to a minimum of 5) or one Willpower (to a minimum of 1).

Reading Kimbery’s Depths
Cost: 10m, 1w; Mins: Essence 5
Type: Simple
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Pull of the Tides

In the deepest waters of Kimbery, there are enchanted secrets and forbidden futures. With this final Evocation, the sorcerer can tap into those secrets to find (or craft) a future for himself that is pleasing to him. When the sorcerer uses this Evocation, he describes an event or end he wishes to accomplish. When he completes this description, he plucks that future from Kimbery’s depths, gaining (Essence) non-Charm dice to be held in reserve. The greater the detail of the future, the more potent this Evocation becomes; add any stunt dice for the description to these non-Charm dice. For the remainder of the story, the sorcerer may draw from this pool to add up to two non-Charm dice to any roll that is taken in accordance with the fell prophecy he has created. The Storyteller is the final arbiter of what counts as “accordance,” but in general, if the sorcerer is acting toward his desired end, he should be able to draw from the pool.

Emperor of Hellfire and Ash

July 20, 2016

This one is a joint effort (honestly, they all are), this time between forum-user Aranfan and myself.  Behold, the first Motonic Amplification Instrument of 3E!

Emperor of Hellfire and Ash (Orichalcum and Starmetal Motonic Amplification Instrument – Artifact ****)

The Emperor of Hellfire and Ash is a guitar of hellish design, made by Ligier to give a “proper instrument” to a human musician who greatly pleased Malfeas during a command performance. While it operates best in the hands of an exalt, in the hands of a mortal it remains a perfectly serviceable exceptional quality guitar that can be played with no penalties for lack of attunement.

The Emperor of Hellfire and Ash costs 2 motes to attune.

Evocations of Emperor of Hellfire and Ash

By attuning to the Emperor of Hellfire and Ash, a Solar or Sidereal gains a bonus non-charm die to Performance actions involving the instrument, on top of the normal die for its Exceptional quality.

Hellforged Wonder of Sound
Cost: 2m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: None
Duration: One Performance Action
Prerequisites: None

Emperor of Hellfire and Ash sparks with green fire as the Exalt strums out a tune worthy of the ages. This Evocation supplements a Performance action, re-rolling 1s and 2s until 1s and 2s fail to appear.

Malfeas-Pleasing Performance
Cost: 2m; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: None
Duration: One Performance Action
Prerequisites: Hellforged Wonder of Sound

The Emperor of Hellfire and Ash was forged to honor a musician who played the greatest song in the world for The King of Hell, and all later songs played on it glory in that tribute. This Evocation supplements a Performance action, reducing the target number for that action by one (normally to 6 but to a minimum of 4).

Munificent Synthesizer Emulation
Cost: –; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisites: Malfeas-Pleasing Performance

The Emperor of Hellfire and Ash hides within it the secrets of timbre, as well as pitch and volume. At no cost, the Emperor of Hellfire and Ash may produce the sound of any instrument the Exalt desires, eliminating any penalties for not having the proper instrument. A strum on the brass strings could produce the melodious whistle of a flute, the discordant blurt of a bagpipe, or even the percussive effects of a drum. Players are encouraged to use this as appropriate stunt fodder.

Pied Guitarist of Hell
Cost: 5m; Mins: Essence 3
Type: Simple
Keywords: Psyche
Duration: One Performance Action
Prerequisites: Munificent Synthesizer Emulation

The song performed by the first bearer of the Emperor of Hellfire and Ash brought the Brass Dancer to his feet, and when Malfeas rises to dance, all present follow suit. This Evocation functions as a Performance-based Instill action, made with (Essence) automatic successes. If the roll overcomes a target’s Resolve, he or she gains a Minor Principle of “I love to dance.” Demons have their Resolve reduced by two against this effect, and the Intimacy so instilled is at Major strength. Repeated uses of this Evocation can increase the strength of an instilled Intimacy.

The Show Must Go On
Cost: 6m, 1wp; Min: Essence 3
Type: Simple
Keywords: Psyche
Duration: Indefinite
Prerequisites: Pied Guitarist Of Hell

The hatred and rage Malfeas feels towards the Solar Exalted knows no bounds, yet when the mortal performer exalted as a Zenith right in front of him, his hand was stayed by the quality and emotional resonance of the song. If Music can calm the rage of Malfeas then what being can resist being similarly swayed?

This charm acts as a performance based Persuade action with (Essence) non-charm automatic successes against the guitarist’s enemies to allow the musician and his allies to flee. This persuasion costs an extra point of Willpower to resist.

“Commissioned” Artifacts

July 11, 2016

These two Artifacts were requested by a member of the Exalted forums, so I was happy to oblige!  Both were forged by Ligier for Jubilant Harp, a Solar Exalt who Exalted in the midst of playing a concert for Malfeas himself.  He also has a sweet guitar forged by Ligier, but that one will have to be posted at a later date.

Shirt of Wicked Brass (Orichalcum Chain Shirt – Artifact ***)

Forged in Hell by Ligier’s green fire, the Shirt of Wicked Brass was a kingly gift for a Solar Exalt. Tainted in vitriol, the orichalcum links of the shirt have taken on a brass-like tinge, giving the shirt its name.

Evocations of the Shirt of Wicked Brass

A Solar or Infernal Exalt who attunes to the Shirt of Wicked Brass gains a non-Charm bonus die to all Resistance rolls against poison or disease.

Flash of Hellfire
Cost: 4m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Simple
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: None

When the light of Creation’s Sun reflects off the brazen links of the Shirt of Wicked Brass, it casts a green hue. A skilled wearer can reflect this baleful light into the eyes of his opponent, blinding her. This Evocation is a difficulty 2 gambit made using the wearer’s (Charisma + Performance). If successful, the target is blinded for the remainder of the scene, taking a -3 penalty to all actions. The target can remove this penalty by rubbing the green pain from her eyes, a Miscellaneous action which cannot be placed in a flurry.

Retribution of the Damned
Cost: 4m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: Counterattack, Decisive-only
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Flash of Hellfire

Those who would strike the Shirt of Wicked Brass would feel the flames of Hell. The wielder may use this Evocation in response to any attack that beats his Defense, creating a special decisive counterattack that rolls (Charisma + Performance) against the target’s Defense. This attack otherwise functions as a regulardecisive attack. Retribution of the Damned does not count as the wearer’s combat action and cannot be used in response to another counterattack.

Green Sun Wasting
Cost: None (+1W); Mins: Essence 2
Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisites: Retribution of the Damned

Malfeas’ ire is toxic; so, too, is the fire of Ligier’s forge. This Evocation permanently enhances its prerequisite, allowing a successful counterattack to inflict a variant of Green Sun Wasting disease on the target for the cost of one temporary Willpower. This disease has Virulence 3, Morbidity of the wearer’s Essence, and an Interval of one day. This disease can be fatal to mortals, and stories tell of even Exalted who have succumbed to it, though these are surely apocryphal…

And its companion piece…

Claws of Brass and Fire (Orichalcum Razor Claws – Artifact ***)

Evocations of the Claws of Brass and Fire

A Solar or Infernal Exalt who attunes to the Claws of Brass and Fire for one additional mote can re-roll one failed die on any attack roll made with the claws.

Claws Strike True
Cost: 1m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: Uniform
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: None

The Claws of Brass and Fire hunger for their enemies’ flesh, and strike true to taste it. This Evocation allows the wielder to re-roll up to (Essence) 1s on an attack roll.

Green Fire Claws
Cost: 2m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Decisive-only
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Claws Strike True

The Claws of Brass and Fire live up to their name, bursting into flame at the moment of impact. Flammable materials catch fire when struck by this Evocation. Adecisive attack adds one automatic success to its damage roll. If the attack deals at least three levels of damage, the target catches fire and must contend with (wielder’s Essence) lethal dice of damage every turn until he’s able to extinguish himself. Fire from this Evocation tends to leave wicked scars on any surface it touches, often burning words and Malfeas phrases in Old Realm into flesh, wood, or stone.

Lash of Hellfire
Cost: 6m,3i; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Green Fire Claws

The flame of the claws can be hurled a short distance by a skilled wielder, lobbing a glob of waxy green fire at a target. An attack supplemented by this Evocation can be made at a target at up to Short range.

Artifact: First-Striking Dawn

July 6, 2016

First-Striking Dawn (Orichalcum and Moonsilver Infinite Chakram – Artifact ***)

Lovely was the Dawn
Stippled in silver and gold
Lethal as a kiss

A razor-edged ring of orichalcum with the above haiku written on its edges in carefully crafted moonsilver, First-Striking Dawn was made for and named after a warrior-princess from the First Age, a Solar queen of great beauty and combat puissance. Yet, it never fit entirely properly in her hand, and though she wielded First-Striking Dawn with aplomb and dignity, she never unlocked all its Evocations, a fact that often disappointed her Lunar mate (and the craftsman of the weapon). When she was slain, the Lunar, Quick-Witted Aken, stole the weapon from her killers and fled with it into the Wyld. It has been passed down from generation to generation of Lunars, all of whom have failed to unlock its final secret. Whether that is some property of the weapon or merely lack of motivation on the part of its wielders is unknown.

Evocations of First-Striking Dawn
When a Solar or Lunar attunes to First-Striking Dawn for one additional mote, she gains a +1 non-Charm die bonus on Join Battle rolls.

Striking First
Cost: 3m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: None

First-Striking Dawn is not a complex weapon, forged with a single goal. To that end, she seems to almost materialize in her wielder’s hand in her moment of need. This Evocation can be used to enhance a Join Battle roll, allowing its bearer to re-roll 6s on that roll until 6s no longer appear.

Sure-Striking Dawn
Cost: 3m; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Uniform
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Striking First

The second Evocation of First-Striking Dawn, and the most potent yet unlocked by its bearers, is a surety of purpose that comes with unhesitating speed. If the wielder’s Initiative is higher than his target’s, he may activate this Evocation to supplement an attack against the target. By doing so, he re-rolls all 1s and 2s on the attack roll until 1s and 2s fail to appear.

Dawn’s Final Kiss
Cost: 4m; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Decisive-only
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Sure-Striking Dawn

The final secret of First-Striking Dawn is her true name – Last-Striking Dawn. This Evocations grants double 10s on a decisive damage roll.

Special Activation Rules: This final Evocation is unlocked when a user who meets the prerequisites loves her mate without compunction or reservation and seals that love with a kiss. The wielder must be a Solar or Lunar, must have a Defining Tie of Love toward their Solar/Lunar mate, and must kiss that mate while holding First-Striking Dawn. At that moment, Dawn’s Final Kiss awakens at no experience cost.

Sorcerous Initiation of Cecaelia

July 5, 2016

Sorcery, in 3E, has changed significantly.  Not only do you now draw motes in from the environment rather than spending your own to power spells, the various sorcery Charms now come with their own benefits, including a free spell, countermagic, and something called a “shaping ritual.”  Shaping rituals are varied and special ways each sorcerer has of pulling motes from thin air in a more flavorful or limited fashion than simple Shape Sorcery actions.  They also often unlock special Merits (which are the new Backgrounds).

As an example, below is a Shaping Ritual of Cecaelia, the Heartless Sentinel.  Most sorcerous initiations allow the choice from one of three Shaping Rituals, but for this example I’ve only created the one.  It’s drawn heavily from combinations of effects in the core book, and it references Merits from the core without duplicating their text, so to get the full benefit of it, you’ll need the core book!

Bargain with Cecaelia

Mara is not the only demon to offer sorcerous initiation.  You have met the demon Cecaelia, the many-tentacled keeper of the depths who eschews all love and reads the future in the depths of Kimbery.  You may have met her as she traveled through Creation’s oceans or seen her face in your nightmares – perhaps you even summoned her yourself to make your bargain.  Through cunning, charisma, or pleasing offerings, you have made a pact with her, taking the power of the Heartless Sentinel for your own.

Shaping Ritual

Like Cecaelia herself, the sorcerer draws power from the sea.  The sorcerer may gain two sorcerous motes each turn while immersed in the ocean.  Being merely on the open ocean still offers some power, allowing her to gain (Essence) motes at the start of the scene but not on any subsequent turns.  Taking damage from an ocean-based environmental hazard gives her five motes per level of damage.  These motes last for the duration of the scene.

Other Benefits

Infernal Nobility (Merit *) – See the Ex3 core book, p. 467

Infernal Visitation (Merit **): Cecaelia appears in the sorcerer’s nightmares, feeding her with fragments of knowledge from Kimbery’s hidden depths.  Once per story, the sorcerer’s player may declare that she is visited by Cecaelia in a dream while sleeping.  She does not recover Willpower from that sleep, but receives some significant benefit determined by the Storyteller – tutelage in a new spell in a single night, double 9s on all Shape Sorcery actions for the next day, the service of a First Circle demon as a gift from Cecaelia, or something similar.  She also wakes with a Minor Principle of “I must not love,” or strengthens that Intimacy if she already possesses it.

Demonic Tattoos: As the Demonic Tattoos benefit from Bargain with Mara on p. 467 of Exalted, save that Cecaelia’s tattoos allow the sorcerer to manipulate or gain power from the seas, alter his control spell to incorporate elements of the ocean or ocean life, or manipulate or empower summoned demons, such as by enhancing them with oceanic mutations.
