Custom TMA – Six Sword Style

January 8, 2011

I woke up this morning with this style in my head.  I hope you all enjoy it!  Huge thanks again to my unofficial editor for this!

Six Sword Style (Terrestrial Martial Art)

During the Shogunate, when all Creation was in turmoil, a small band of refugees fled to the Northern mountains and established a monastery there, where they could rest and remain apart from the violence of the rest of Creation.  Still, the monks knew that they could not remain defenseless, for there were those warlords who would not permit them to be at peace.  They looked for what weapons the refugees had brought with them, and they found six swords among them, one of each type.  Seeing this as a sign, they meditated on the nature of the sword, and of the swords, and of themselves.  What followed became known as Six Sword Style.

Six Sword Style is a Terrestrial Martial Art.  It is practiced unarmed initially, but each understanding of the style brings with it its own expansion to the weapons available.  It is traditionally practiced without armor, but can be used in light armor.  Any heavier armor is incompatible with the style’s understandings.  Today, Six Sword Style is practiced almost exclusively by the monks of the Six Sword Abbey, still isolated in the mountains north of Whitewall.  Nine understandings comprise the style, utilizing six swords, and taught by the last three remaining masters.

Chopping Sword Strike
Cost: 2 motes; Mins: Martial Arts 2, Essence 1; Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None

The chopping sword is not a subtle weapon, intended to cleave through armor and bone.  The first understanding of the swordsman is this: all swords are weapons, meant to injure.  A sword may be a useful tool for other tasks, but all swords are intended to cut.  This Charm supplements an unarmed attack, adding the martial artist’s Essence to its Damage.  In addition, the martial artist permanently considers chopping swords to be form weapons for Six Sword Style.

Great Sword Blow
Cost: 2 motes; Mins: Martial Arts 2, Essence 1; Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None

The great sword is massive and slow, but its strikes are powerful.  The second understanding of the swordsman is this: a sword cannot harm a target if it cannot breach his defenses.  This Charm supplements an unarmed attack, increasing its Overwhelming quality to his Essence+1 or 4, whichever is higher.  In addition, the martial artist permanently considers great swords to be form weapons for Six Sword Style.

Short Sword Slash
Cost: 3 motes; Mins: Martial Arts 2, Essence 1; Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None

The short sword is a useful weapon, quick but still without finesse.  The third understanding of the swordsman is this: speed is more important than power.  This Charm supplements an unarmed attack, reducing its Speed by one (to a minimum of 3).  In addition, the martial artist permanently considers short swords to be form weapons for Six Sword Style.

Slashing Sword Dance
Cost: 1 mote/point; Mins: Martial Arts 2, Essence 1; Type: Reflexive (Step 2)
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None

The slashing sword is a weapon of finesse and grace, weaving glittering arcs in the air.  The fourth understanding of the swordsman is this: you must live if you are to defeat your opponent.  When activated, the martial artist may spend up to (Essence) motes.  Each mote spent in this way adds one to the martial artist’s Parry DV.  In addition, the martial artist permanently considers slashing swords to be form weapons for Six Sword Style.

Hook Sword Subdual
Cost: 1 mote; Mins: Martial Arts 2, Essence 1; Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None

The hook sword is a weapon designed to remove the enemy’s fangs.  The fifth understanding of the swordsman is this: if your enemy has no weapon, he cannot use it to harm you.  This Charm supplements a disarm attempt made with an unarmed attack, removing the external penalty to the attempt.  If the martial artist’s attack benefits from the D tag, the bonus from the tag increases by 1.  In addition, the martial artist permanently considers hook swords to be form weapons for Six Sword Style.

Straight Sword Extraction
Cost: 4 motes; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 2; Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None

A straight sword is quick and well-balanced, nearing the pinnacle of martial understanding.  The sixth understanding of the swordsman is this: if you have no weapon, you cannot use it against your enemy.  This Charm supplements a Join Battle roll, allowing the martial artist to ready a form weapon Reflexively as a part of the action, and adding its Accuracy in dice to his Join Battle roll.  In addition, the martial artist permanently considers straight swords to be form weapons for Six Sword Style.

Six Sword Form
Cost: 5 motes; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2; Type: Simple (Speed 6)
Keywords: Combo-Basic, Form-type
Duration: One Scene
Prerequisite Charms: Chopping Sword Strike, Great Sword Blow, Short Sword Slash, Slashing Sword Dance, Hook Sword Subdual, Straight Sword Extraction
The differences in different swords are all minute.  The swordsman knows this.  The seventh understanding of the swordsman is this: all swords are one.  While this Charm is active, the swordsman may spend one mote as an innate ability to Reflexively sheathe any number of swords to Reflexively draw any number of other swords he has on his person.  Furthermore, he may spend one mote as an innate ability when using any of the Form’s prerequisite Charms to change which sword they enhance.

Six Sword Understanding Posture
Cost: None (+2m, 1W); Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 3; Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisite Charms: Six Sword Form

Time is an illusion, our perception of a thing that cannot be perceived but in its lack.  The eighth understanding of the swordsman is this: a battle is not made of many, separate attacks, but is one, single attack, one single cut, one single thrust, played out in our perception of time.  This Charm permanently upgrades all Charms before the Form Charm, allowing them to change their Duration to One Scene for a surcharge of 2m, 1W.

Sidebar: The Ninth Understanding
The ninth and final understanding of the swordsman is not how to strike, but when.  Sadly, no Charm has yet been developed by the Six Sword Brotherhood to teach their students this crucial understanding, since there is no universal science behind it, and so they have been forced to rely on traditional methods of education.  Further complicating the matter, no two masters agree on when to strike, and so the ninth understanding is taught differently by each of the three masters.
